America today and yesterday...survival or integrity

Am watching an excellent film at the moment and it has made me think back to last week and the amazing events that took place in the US. A country where fifty years ago the current President's father wouldn't have been served in a restaurant, where Communists were hounded out of society in a wave of terror similiar, I imagine, to what Jews in Nazi Germany went through before Kristelnacht where the knives really came down.

Last weeks coverage by CNN was, it has to be said, thorough. I learnt of an incident in the states in the 1950s that took place in Little Rock (Arkansas) where 9 coloured students had to be escorted to school by the National Guard that Roosevelt federalised in order to overide the local Governors decision not to integrate...I believe that those nine students were all present at Obama's inaugural ceremony.

America has been able to take a great leap forward, thanks to the amazing campaign run by Obama's team. The step forward is not only the first ever Afro American president, but moreover a population who now see the point in voting...His connectivity to the grass roots, to men and women who would never have gone to the poles, has meant he has been able to open up the whole political scene beyond the gates of Washington and its tight knit circle of lobbyists, politicians, senators and political hangers on.

Let's hope that this totally connected, 2.0 President will remain so. As so many political commentators are saying, the task ahead is immense and it could well be a case of one step forward, two steps back...

Going back to George Clooney's film, apart, the issue is very much press integrity and how a few hard nosed journalists decided to stick to their guns. Echos of Watergate...yes, very much so...but aboveall an issue that is still one. Here in France, the President has just come up with a rescue package for the newspaper industry, statistics show that more and more people are reading Internet media, recently a luxury conglomerate, LVMH bought out a local financial newspaper (Les Echos). Survival versus integrity...how do you chose ?
